Elbow, wrist and hand

We are committed to helping you understand the root causes of your discomfort or pain

Elbow, wrist, and hand injuries are more common than you might think and often result from issues like strained or inflamed tendons, ligaments, or other soft tissues. Repetitive strain injuries and tendon problems are among the most frequent causes, leading to pain, stiffness, and difficulty with movement. At A1 Bodyworks Clinic, our osteopaths are specialised in diagnosing and treating these conditions, providing tailored care to help you move freely and comfortably again.

While athletes and those with physically demanding jobs are at higher risk, even everyday activities like typing, cooking, or carrying shopping bags can lead to strain or discomfort.

This list includes some of the conditions we treat at our clinic, but it’s not comprehensive. If you have a condition that isn’t listed here, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’d be happy to discuss your symptoms and let you know if we can assist you.

Tennis and Golfer's Elbow

Medial and Lateral Epicondylitis, commonly known as Golfer’s Elbow and Tennis Elbow, are repetitive strain injuries affecting the elbow. These conditions occur when repetitive motions, such as gripping, twisting, or repetitive arm movements, overload the tendons in the forearm and elbow, leading to inflammation and pain.

  • Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow) is the more common form. It causes pain on the outer part of the elbow, and you may experience discomfort when gripping objects, turning a doorknob, or lifting something like a kettle.

  • Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer's Elbow) affects the inner elbow and can cause pain that radiates down the forearm and into the wrist.

These conditions are not limited to tennis players or golfers—any repetitive movement from activities like gardening, decorating, DIY, or even extended computer use can contribute to the development of epicondylitis.

Our osteopaths are highly skilled in treating these conditions. Treatment typically starts with addressing pain and inflammation, followed by exercises and stretches to strengthen and lengthen the forearm muscles, helping to reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.

Ulnar Nerve Entrapment

Ulnar Nerve Entrapment occurs when the ulnar nerve, which runs through the inner elbow, becomes compressed. You've likely experienced hitting your "funny bone," which isn't a bone at all but the spot where the ulnar nerve is close to the surface of the skin. This compression can cause pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates down to the wrist and into the little and ring fingers.

The symptoms of ulnar nerve entrapment include:

  • Numbness and tingling in the little and ring fingers.

  • Pain or discomfort along the inner side of the elbow, forearm, or hand.

Our osteopaths focus on relieving the pressure on the nerve by reducing inflammation, improving muscle tone, and restoring mobility to the elbow and other related joints. We can also provide exercises to continue at home to help manage and prevent further entrapment.

Dr Quervain's Tenosynovitis

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is a painful condition affecting the tendons of the wrist and thumb. It is often caused by repetitive strain and is common in individuals who perform repetitive wrist movements, such as plumbers and mechanics. It is also associated with pregnancy and breastfeeding, though the exact cause in these cases is unclear.

Symptoms of De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis include:

  • Pain and tenderness near the base of the thumb and wrist, especially when making a fist or moving the thumb.

  • Difficulty with activities that require grip or thumb movement, such as turning a doorknob or holding objects.

Our osteopaths can perform a specific test to diagnose the condition accurately. After diagnosis, we offer treatment to reduce pain and inflammation, as well as exercises and lifestyle advice to help prevent recurrence.

Olecranon Bursitis

Olecranon Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa at the tip of the elbow, causing swelling and pain. It is often caused by a direct blow to the elbow or prolonged pressure, such as leaning on it for extended periods—leading to the nickname "student's elbow". The condition can also result from infections or autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.

Symptoms include:

  • A noticeable swelling at the back of the elbow.

  • Pain and tenderness when the elbow is touched or moved.

  • In some cases, redness and warmth in the area if there is infection.

Osteopathy can help by draining the area to reduce inflammation and providing lifestyle modifications and advice to prevent recurrence. Exercises and gentle movement can also help support recovery and reduce the risk of future flare-ups.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve in the wrist becomes compressed, leading to irritation and discomfort.

Symptoms include:

  • Tingling, numbness, or a "pins and needles" sensation in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.

  • Difficulty gripping or weakness in the hand.

  • Symptoms that often worsen at night.

  • Temporary relief from shaking the hand.

Common causes of CTS include prolonged computer use, using vibratory tools, and pregnancy.

Osteopathy can help by:

  • Reducing muscle tightness around the wrist and forearm.

  • Improving joint mobility in the wrist and hand.

  • Reducing inflammation.

Additionally, your osteopath can offer advice on ergonomic changes, such as adjusting your desk setup or using a wrist splint, to help alleviate symptoms and prevent further irritation.

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in the joints, often referred to as ‘wear and tear.’ This occurs as the cartilage in the joint becomes thinner, which leads to increased friction. While osteoarthritis can happen at any age due to injury, it is most commonly seen in people over 45. Although it’s a natural part of the aging process, many people with osteoarthritis may not experience any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they typically include stiffness, reduced range of movement, and pain during or after activity.

There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but osteopathy can provide significant relief by improving joint movement, reducing pain, and enhancing function. For those awaiting a joint replacement, we can provide “pre-hab” to prepare and strengthen the joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a different type of arthritis that can affect multiple joints at once. If our osteopaths suspect rheumatoid arthritis, they will refer you to your GP for a blood test to confirm the diagnosis. Although rheumatoid arthritis is more complex than osteoarthritis, osteopathy can still offer symptom relief, often as part of a combined treatment approach with your GP.
